Quiet boom research
Low-boom demonstrator aircraft shape the fuselage and wing so shockwaves do not coalesce into a sharp double bang, producing a soft thump instead. If flight-test community-response data supports a noise-based rule to replace the outright overland speed ban, the addressable route map roughly triples.
The engine problem
Efficient supersonic cruise wants a low-bypass engine; airport noise rules want a high-bypass one. Variable-cycle designs and thicker, slower fan stages are the compromises on the table, and no clean-sheet civil supersonic engine has yet been certified.
Fuel and climate
Per seat, a supersonic aircraft burns several times what a subsonic widebody uses, and it cruises high enough that emissions have stronger radiative effects. Operators plan to lean heavily on sustainable aviation fuel, which pushes their cost base up further.
The market reality
Business and premium transatlantic traffic can absorb a fare premium for halved journey times. The question is whether that pool is deep enough to amortise a clean-sheet airframe and engine — and whether videoconferencing already ate part of it.
